This weekend I took a trip out to Glamis, California to see Union Pacific's bustling Sunset Route. This rail line was built in 1877 by Southern Pacific, running from West Colton yard near San Bernardino all the way to New Orleans. Amtrak runs the Sunset Limited (inherited from SP along with the route and associated power and equipment) three times weekly on this route, which unfortunately I did not catch. I did manage to catch a number of freights running in both directions, including several manifests, autorack units, (manifests being trains of mixed cars and units being composed of the same kind of car) and double stack container intermodal units. Power included SD70s of various kinds, C44-9Ws, AC4400CWs, and ES44s. There were two standout locomotives: UP 4589, an SD70M, and UP 799, an ancient EMD GP35 built in 1965 for the Western Pacific Railroad scooped up during the merger with UP in 1982.

UP 7186, a GE AC44CW, leads a manifest over the crossing.

The same manifest lead by 7186 showing 4589 and Norfolk Southern 9902, a GE C44-9W.

 |
UP 7462, a GE ES44AC built in 2009, leads another manifest southeast through Glamis.

 |
UP 799, the GP35 originally built for the late, great WP, looks worse for wear as she sits behind 7462.

8446, an EMD SD70ACE, leads a double stack intermodal unit train with
UP 6191, a GE AC4400CW (a unit built in 1995 for the Southern Pacific)
trailing.

EMD SD70AH UP 9008 leads an autorack unit.

ES44AC UP 7606 leads a mixed train of autoracks and intermodal well cars with 6247, another ex-SP AC4400CW, trailing.

An intermodal train in the distance, taken from Osborne overlook in the Imperial Dunes.

 |
UP 8203, a fairly new GE ET44 (C45AH in UP service) leads an intermodal train.

Last train of the day before I moved on! 7109, an AC4400CW, leads a mixed intermodal manifest of double stacks and trailers on spine cars.
